Community Organizers 'Appalled' by Their Portrayal

Submitted by James, Sep 5, 2008 11:34

So, the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now (ACORN), issues a statement saying it was "extremely disappointed" and that they are "appalled" at Governor Palin's, Governor Pataki's and Mayor Giuliani's "belittling" and "condescending attacks" on so-called "community organizers?" This is the same ACORN that: In July 2007, settled the largest case of voter fraud in the history of Washington State. Seven ACORN workers had submitted nearly 2,000 bogus voter registration forms. According to case records, they flipped through phone books for names to use on the forms, including "Leon Spinks," "Frekkie Magoal" and "Fruto Boy Crispila." Three ACORN election hoaxers pleaded guilty in October. Has been implicated in similar voter fraud schemes in Missouri, Ohio and at least 12 other states. The Wall Street Journal reported: "In Ohio in 2004, a worker for one affiliate was given crack cocaine in exchange for fraudulent registrations that included underage voters, dead voters and applications with names such as "Mary Poppins," "Dick Tracy" and "Jive Turkey." In March 2007, Philadelphia elections officials accused the nonprofit advocacy group of filing fraudulent voter registrations prior to the April 22nd Pennsylvania primary. The charges have been forwarded to the city district attorney's office. In July 2008, Pennsylvania investigators asked the public for help in locating a fugitive named Luis R. Torres-Serrano, who is accused "of submitting more than 100 fraudulent voter registration forms he collected on behalf of the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now to county election officials." Also in July, a massive, nearly-$1 million embezzlement scheme by top ACORN officials was exposed. Last month, a New Mexico TV station reported on child rapists, drug offenders, and forgery convicts on ACORN's payroll. Just last week, Milwaukee's top election official announced plans to seek criminal investigations of 37 ACORN employees accused of offering gifts to sign up voters (including pre-paid gas cards and restaurant cards) for falsifying driver's license numbers, Social Security numbers or other information on voter registration cards. This is "community organizing?" It sounds like a criminal enterprise to me – all subsidized by our tax dollars. ACORN receives 40 percent of its revenues from American taxpayers. Now THAT is truly "appalling" and we all should be "extremely disappointed."
