Longtime Residents Oppose Park Avenue Median

Submitted by Anonymous, Jan 4, 2007 22:14

As a longtime resident of 79th and Park, I have seen and heard many accidents at this intersection. They typically involve taxis speeding and running red lights. Whether the driver is someone from a culture with different standards for driving, or just a narcissist who doesn't care, the solution is to make violation of the speed limit -- and reckless driving in general -- punishable by a fine of $500 to $1,000 for each incident. Speed can be monitored at intersections and also through devices installed in taxis and limos, which can communicate the car's travelling speed and identity. We can also use photography to capture the faces and license plates of speeding drivers, as they do on the autobahn. You can't barricade off every pedestrian walkway, but you can cause some significant pain for drivers who demonstrate a willingness to brazenly violate the law and risk pedestrian safety. Let's hold people accountable for their conduct.
