Back to School: Philip Roth's 'Indignation'

Submitted by michael roloff, Sep 10, 2008 11:49

I need to add something to my first comment. Roth is a creature of the fifties, as am I, and I don't think his appeal is confined to, nor does he describe, suffer a Jewish syndrome, but that of a country that has ruined sexuality since its founding, as it has so much else. Of course Roth is entirely chauvinist and vain pasha who'd like to have one fresh lewd young thing after another, as would I. What I miss in his work and attitude to women is that of the man who is a cavalier. That is a grave fault, basic fault. Inhuman.
