Bush's Legacy in Danger

Submitted by Adina Kutnicki, Sep 12, 2008 09:00

When it comes to the Jews, leaders are very adept at putting together memorials, and opining over what might have been, had they acted in time. While another Holocaust once again looms against the Jews, world leaders, and particularly President Bush, will be unable to absolve themselves of direct responsibility by feigning ignorance. Iran's president has declared openly, repeatedly, vividly and brazenly before the world precisely what he intends to do to Israel, which comprises more than half of world Jewry. President Bush will not be able to obfuscate, as did FDR in the lead up to the Holocaust, and during the gassing of European Jewry. It was only through massive pressure exerted by Treasury Secretary Morgenthau (through the heroic work of Attorney DuBois & others) that FDR was forced to act. Even after all the horrific revelations before him, he still refused to give the orders to bomb the tracks leading to the gas chambers. There is only so much that a leader can do to protect his legacy. After 60 years FDR's halo is beginning to tarnish, at least in regard to the Holocaust. As a student of history, President Bush would be wise to learn history's lessons.
