Actually, Jones' "classic LPs" were recorded in the 60s. He did enjoy some success in the 70s and 80s, but not the chart hits like he had in the 60s with Kapp Records, when in his 20s and at the peak of his vocal power. I know that many baby boomers prefer the more modern style of music Jones was recording in the 70s, but there are plenty of us who appreciate more Jack's contributions to the Great American Songbook in the 60s. Jones wasn't just learning from Sinatra, Bennett and Torme - he was sharing the charts with them. If more journalists would listen to JJ's old Kapp albums and acknowledge that they exist (and that most of what's on them is far better than Wives and Lovers), maybe MCA would find greater incentive to reissue them on CD. This could help generate more interest in his 70s material as well.
