Most Overrated Stat: the Triple Double

Submitted by Peter, Jan 5, 2007 13:44

What makes the magic number in a triple double is the double digit number that is ten. What else would you use to compare who has the best all around game in the NBA? Assists, points, and rebounds are the top 3 category in stats, and to bash someone just because he had a ten point game along with the other tens is quite unfair. I personally think that PPG is the most overrated stat in the game, just because a player can get 20 plus points per night, that doesn't mean that they're helping the team out. The player can be shooting in the low 40's or the high 30's to acheive those 20 PPG average. Your blaming Jason Kidd for averaging a high figure in the rebounds and assists category to make a case for yourself, but JKidd is the best all around player in the game. How else are you going to help your team out? You can say better defense, consistent shooting, but who else can replace those assist numbers and the times the player bailed you out of a funk with a key rebound? Also, would you rather have somebody averaging 22 PPG with 2 rebounds and 2 assits or a player of Jason Kidd's caliber getting 14/9/8 per night? Like you said, almost anybody could be averaging in the high figures in the NBA given his time and minutes. So what really is your argument here? Best all-around mean best all-around, unless somebody starts averaging 10 blocks and 10 steals per game, I'd say we all should just settle for the traditional 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists as the model for a best all-around player, and a player who helps his team the most . Who says 10 is the magic number? The words in "triple double" does.
