The Making of Benjamin Disraeli: Adam Kirsch's New Biography

Submitted by stan meyer, Sep 18, 2008 23:58

For Jewish historians, Disraelis explicit identity as a "Jew for Jesus" is the Gorilla at the table. Many writers don't want to touch this hot potato. But Disraeli did not see a contradiction between his deeply rooted Jewish identity and his Christian faith. In fact he saw one a fulfillment of the other. When Queen Elizabeth asked him "what are you?" he replied "Madam, I am the missing page between the Old and New Testament." When defending Rothchild's right to hold a seat in the house he demanded "Without Judaism, where is our Christianity?"
