Most Overrated Stat: the Triple Double

Submitted by Jay, Jan 5, 2007 14:47

It almost sounds unfair to players who gets triple doubles. I guess we covet such feats because it is a rare thing. In Oscar Robertson's days, it commonly occurred and therefore was overlooked by many, taken for granted even. Not that it is placed on a pedestal that a player plans to go after it every night. It just happens. Players, just as much as Oscar did, just go out there every night and do their best. Sometimes, they may have a bad shooting night, as was the case for Jason Kidd, therefore they look to contribute to their team in other ways i.e. passing and rebounding. He doesn't force his team mates to shoot the passes that he throws their way, they just do. As for rewarding passes, I must say I slightly agree. As with hockey, even up to three passes are awarded an assist to highlight a good offensive execution of teamwork and strategy. But that is a double edge, sword. Because then we'd be calling for screens to be called assists and charges to be called steals etc. I guess STATISTICS in itself are overrated, simply because they are, in today's world. I've always been a fan of the dirty work, the things done on the court that don't fill up the stat sheet yet help you win games, as a matter of fact, that's how i play. But in today's world, where you have people who literally make a living of statistics in Fantasy games and the like, it's not hard to see why statistics in themselves are highly revered. And any time someone fills up the stat sheet, double-double, triple, quad, five of five, whatever, someone out there rejoices.
