Michael Shermer has a remarkable ability to take on an idea and flex it like a Rubik's cube to show the different patterns of texture. His provocative articles in Scientific American are a delight to read as they are witty, insightful and well grounded in logic and empirical evidence. He has had to courage to debate such notables as William Dembski and Michael Behe and the out and out guts to confront double-talking charlatans like Kent Hovind, the bible-thumping psuedo-scientist dubbed "Dr. Dino." In this short paper, Michael gives us a synthesis of the issues discussed in his provocative book, Why Darwin matters, in which he provides the layman with a useful viewpoint of the dialectic between those who look for an anthropomorphic source for the origins of the universe and those who do not. As a scientist and anthropologist, who also examines the same questions as Michael, I never miss a chance to read anything he has written Can't say that I agree with him on everything down the line, e.g., he is willing to consider Richard Dawkins's notion of "memes," non-material fragments who contribute to adaptability, which most of my profession eschew, but in substance and focus, his views are balanced, fair and to the point., as are the issues discussed in this article.
