I thought him decent. I'm not a Republican but I genuinely liked him, believed he had the courage and intelligence to stand up for individual rights of Americans. He never embarrassed me – as Nixon and Agnew certainly had. Mr. Ford seemed to have the capacity to listen. And his wife, First Lady Betty Ford was and is an inspiration to most people of the world -- that listen. I do wish all American presidents were as little concerned with their legacies that seem inevitably to lead to war, instead working as quietly with their power to persuade and form constituencies. President Ford held qualities that all Americans respect and all American presidents should.
