In Fight for Irish Votes, a McCain Stance Is Questioned

Your statement that the IRA "did not renounce an armed campaign against Britain until 2005" is misleading. It takes one statement from that year and twists it completely out of context, ignoring more than a decade of vital history: the IRA declared a ceasefire in 1994 and with one short respite forced by British partisan politics a few years later held to it, and still does. During that time Mr. Clinton's brave move in breaking the McCain-style mold of knee-jerk support for every British move on Ireland, no matter how wrong headed, produced historic success. Mr. Adams is not a figure tied to "terrorism" but recognized around the world as a peace-maker. To advise Obama not to embrace him would be like telling him to shun Mandela because neo-cons might slander him for it.
