McCain's arms were broken when his plane was shot down, he ejected, and he parachuted into a lake badly wounded. He was immediately taken to a hospital and treated, including a transfusion for blood loss, or he would not have survived. He was interviewed in that hospital several times over a period of months by visitors from several nations (e.g. France and Spain), to whom he always said he was well treated.
