Martin van Creweld's exploration of the nature of war, as described in Mr. Hanson's well-written commentary, reminded me of military historian J.F.C. Fuller's view on its frequency, delivered in the first sentence of Fuller's preface to 'A Military History of the Western World, Vol. 1': "Whether war is a necessary factor in the evolution of mankind may be disputed, but a fact which cannot be questioned is that from the earliest records of man to the present age war has been his dominant preoccupation."
