Saying that Brinkley "was responsible for overseeing the tenure review of Barnard anthropology professor Nadia Abu El-Haj" is an overstatement. Barnard is a separate entity with its own faculty and administration, including its own provost. The Banrard provost is responsible for tenure reviews of Barnard faculty. The files of those who are approved by Barnard are then sent to Columbia's provost for a further review. Up to that point, the CU provost is essentially not involved. Brinkley could have vetoed the El-Haj appointment, but he really didn't oversee the process.
