While demographics have changed, school holidays have been unchanged since the 1960s. With almost 12 percent of students now Muslim, or 120,000 kids who could miss tests for following their conscience, not to mention a growing number of teachers, it is time to give at least one day off. Mayor Bloomberg is wrong to resist this bill. I thought he was supposed to be innovative. Making this accomodation in the school year design will actually speed inclusion AND assimilation--all good for the city.
