Alexander Hamilton To Be Celebrated on His 250th Birthday

Submitted by Carol Hamilton, Jan 10, 2007 19:56

It's excellent that New Yorkers are recognizing the contributions of Hamilton, the only New Yorker to sign the Constitution and the one who fought hard to get New York to join the new union. But all the emphasis on Hamilton's financial acumen may obscure the breadth of his interests. He came to the US to study medicine, a subject that he was interested in, and knowledgeable about, all his life. He was a tender father and loving, affectionate (although not always faithful) husband. And although he was a financial wizard, he himself took no interest in wealth, writing to his friend Robert Troup, who had offered to get him in on a land deal, "I don't want to be rich." Celebrated for his practical, administrative abilities and pragmatic worldview, Hamilton is also a romantic figure who lived an extraordinary life.
