A ‘Unique’ Form of ‘Terrorism’

Submitted by John Joyce, Mar 22, 2011 18:13

Imagine that our currency was linked to either or both gold and silver gram measurements. In that case would the currency then be tied to fluctuations in the metals market? Would the conversion be specified at the amount of precious metal purchasable by each paper denomination in use? For example today my dollar would be equivalent to the fractional weight of gold/silver which it could purchase on the market. If the metals market rallied my dollar would increase symbiotically and if the market plunged so would the value of my dollar.

It seems it all boils down to having faith in the system to reward our labor and investments with amounts of currency commensurate with our efforts and the value of our investment. Gold’s value is largely symbolic and based on scarcity. Gold’s metallurgical characteristics create a tension as when utilized in manufacture and adornment it is unavailable for currency back-up.

Life is change not stasis. It seems you argue for stasis in linking the diminishment of a weight standard with the flagrant printing of currency. Should we find a less volatile exemplar by which to standardize weight we will more deeply enshrine a constant value but volatility is the very nature of the modern marketplace and as such seems to belie our attempts to stabilize our currency.

What benefits do you believe will emerge should your ideas be made into policy?

Jack Joyce
