Essentially, this article highlights Newt's conservative failings. Every item mentioned is one that makes me reluctant to support Newt. BUT. Newt did not craft the state health care bill that went on to be the model for Obamacare. He supported a single payer system at some point, but for Romney to declare Obamacare a disaster seems absurd, under the circumstances.

What we KNOW about Romney: He claims to be conservative. He half-way apologizes for his slide into liberalist tendencies in MA with the defense that it was the only way to be elected there. The people wanted universal coverage so he had no choice. What this tells us about Romney is that he WILL suppress his "conservative principles" in order to win or hold a seat.

Between Newt and Romney, both have done or supported things that make me want to hold my nose before voting for them. But Romney and healthcare? Inexcusably ridiculous. Especially with his own campaign advisors saying "We can't get rid of the whole bill" even while Romney opens every public appearance saying, "I will overturn Obamacare."

If the damn Republican elite would get out of the way and stop picking off the candidates they didn't personally anoint, we wouldn't be stuck choosing between Romney and Newt. No principles among the lot of them. They might be surprised to realize what principles matter to fly-over country voters in this election: Economy + national security. Half of us are pro-life, half pro-choice. Some of us are gay, some oppose gay marriage with a holy passion. But all of us realize that our personal preferences and moral beliefs won't matter one bit to someone with no job, no house, and no prospects.

Between Newt and Romney, I'd put my money on Newt as the guy best prepared to stand up to the pressure of the press, communicate his message, and not cave under pressure. I don't care who he did or didn't sleep with, what church he does or doesn't go to. He was not on the national election stage in 2008 touting the MA health care strategy as the solution for the country and turning against it as soon as the country made her wishes known. Romney won't repeal health care. He'll bow to the pressure of the press within weeks of arriving in office.
