No understanding of the Iranian situation is possible without an appreciation of two simple facts:
1. Although Iran is still a major exporter of crude oil, her deposits of sweet, "easy" oil peaked and declined years ago. This has resulted in Iran being a nett importer of refined fuel to service her rising standard of living. She MUST consider nuclear power as an option for future electricity supply.
2. Though not of world standard, Iran has handy deposits of uranium. Iran therefore has the potential to be self-reliant in nuclear power, if not actually a nett exporter of refined uranium.
But let's not let facts get in the way of a good propaganda story.
