Remember that during the Cuban/West European missile crisis Usa had plenty of missiles in the Soviet Unions ´backyard´, that is the West Europe. These missiles were in the range of Soviet cities. So the missiles didn´t come to Cuba without a reason.
The Latin American leftist-islamist connection is bizarre because marxists by definition should be atheists so collaboration with reactionary islamists sounds strange. But it was just as bizarre when Usa was co-operating with the islamist militants in Afganistan and elsewhere back in the 80´s and after. So it´s nothing new under the sun. It´s about the enemy of my enemy is my friend thing and balance of power politics.
