I was heartened by your optimistic (for the West) account of the event, because I was present at the morning session and unfortunately did not form the impression that you did. I felt that the audience were highly supportive of Livingstone and Yaquoob. They seemed to receive noisy support for their anti-West diatribes. Pipes, unlike Livingstone, is not a demagogue and so spoke in quiet, measured tones and although he did receive some agreement from the audience, it was Livingstone who was far more warmly received. Possibly, I was sitting among his supporters and gained a distorted impression. I hope so.
