'Bush To Bow to the Nine on Terrorism Detainees'

The front page of The New York Sun noted that Justice Scalia, in his dissent to extending Habeas Corpus to Guantanamo prisoners, cited a report that more than 30 men released from Guantanamo have become terrorists or soldiers (National, "Bush To Bow to the Nine on Terrorism Detainees," June 13, 2008).

Does Justice Scalia ask: "If a person is held (and perhaps tortured) in a foreign prison for years, is deprived of basic legal rights, and is cut off from seeing any of his family, should we really believe that he will emerge from prison with forgiveness in his heart for the United States?

Does not flagrant disregard of justice create enemies?

Did he ask: "How many prisoners at Guantanamo have been found guilty of terrorist acts?"

'Cap That Bottle Scare'

Nancy McDermott heaps scorn on me and hundreds of thousands of other parents for taking action against Bisphenol A, a toxic chemical used in common household plastics [Oped, "Cap That Bottle Scare," June 9, 2008].

Contrary to her assertions, our concern is based on scientific evidence from laboratory studies that show exposure to BPA may have profound health effects on infants and children, including altered brain development, increased breast cancer risk, and early onset of puberty in girls.

Further, though Ms. McDermott dismisses studies on animals — conducted because of their ability to predict outcomes in humans — I'm not willing to have the chemical industry use my children as test subjects.

Our government needs to better protect us by requiring the industry to prove their chemicals are safe before adding them to thousands of consumer products we and our children use every day.
