British Soldiers Cleared In Iraq War Crimes Case

LONDON — Five British soldiers, including a decorated army colonel, have been cleared of charges relating to the alleged mistreatment of Iraqi detainees after a five-month court martial.

The former commanding officer of British troops in Basra, Colonel Jorge Mendonca, was yesterday acquitted at a military court in southern England of negligently performing a duty.
