Latvia Ousts Chief Of Anti-Corruption Bureau

By AARON EGLITIS, Bloomberg News | June 30, 2008

RIGA, Latvia — Latvian lawmakers ousted the director of the country's anti-corruption bureau, Aleksejs Loskutovs, after about $301,980 disappeared while he was in charge of the organization.

The legislature voted 52-40 to remove Mr. Loskutovs yesterday after an investigation disclosed that money was missing from a safe at the bureau. At the same time, no confidence votes in Defense Minister Vinets Veldre and Agriculture Minister Martins Roze failed.

Latvia's last government fell after the prime minister tried to fire Mr. Loskutovs over alleged accounting violations, a move that led to the resignations of two ministers and public protests.
