Second Fugitive Aided In Arrest of Bosnian Serb

By HARRY DE QUETTEVILLE, The Daily Telegraph | July 24, 2008

Berlin — Radovan Karadzic was arrested after information provided to investigators by The Hague's other most wanted man, General Ratko Mladic, intelligence sources disclosed yesterday.

Mr. Mladic, who was Mr Karadzic's military commander and led Bosnian Serb troops during the massacre at Srebrenica, is one of two Balkan war crimes suspects still on the run. He allegedly passed on the information in a bargain with investigators to delay his capture and avoid trial at the International Criminal Tribunal for the Former Yugoslavia at The Hague.

But Mr. Mladic's betrayal of his kindred spirit and one-time political master appears to have backfired as Mr. Karadzic's capture has brought ever greater pressure on Serbia to seize him, too. His arrest is now expected within weeks as his political support network crumbles.

A source close to the German foreign intelligence service, the BND, said that Mr. Mladic has been negotiating with those hunting him over the terms of his capture, and "gave information [on Mr. Karadzic's whereabouts] to save himself."

The source said that British intelligence officers had helped bring about Mr. Karadzic's capture by Serb police in a collaborative effort by Western agencies including the CIA and the German and French secret services.
