Serbian President Dissolves Parliament

By Bloomberg News | March 14, 2008

BELGRADE, Serbia — President Tadic of Serbia dissolved Parliament and set early elections for May 11, saying voters need to weigh in on the growing dispute about Serbia's future.

The decision was prompted by the collapse of Prime Minister Kostunica's Cabinet over a dispute about a resolution that conditioned eventual membership in the European Union with the preservation of now-independent Kosovo within Serbia.

"Elections are a democratic way for people to determine how Serbia will develop in the years to come," Mr. Tadic said in a statement released by his office. Serbia's economy is being hurt by political turmoil and developments related to Kosovo's declaration of independence on February 17.
