By Associated Press | May 11, 2007

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico — America filed charges of conspiracy and providing support for terrorism yesterday against a Guantanamo detainee accused of working as a driver and bodyguard for Osama bin Laden.

Salim Ahmed Hamdan of Yemen has been detained at Guantanamo since May 2002. In the charging documents, the military said Mr. Hamdan conspired with Mr. bin Laden and other Al Qaeda leaders in the bombings of the American embassies in Kenya and Tanzania in 1998, the attack on the USS Cole in 2000, and the attacks in America on September 11, 2001.

In addition to working as Mr. bin Laden's driver and bodyguard, the U.S. said Mr. Hamdan transported and delivered weapons to Al Qaeda and its associates and trained at terrorist camps.
