Oregon Supreme Court To Hear Debate On Circumcision

By Staff Reporter of the Sun | November 6, 2007

The sensitive topic of circumcision is scheduled to be debated this morning before the Oregon Supreme Court as it decides whether a father has the right to have his 12-year-old son circumcised over the objection of the boy's mother. The case is being closely watched by circumcision opponents and by Jewish groups that want to keep unfettered the traditional practice of cutting the foreskin of Jewish males.

James Boldt, who converted to Judaism and has full custody of his son, contends that the boy wants to have the procedure. The boy's mother, Lia Boldt, asserts that he said he did not want to be circumcised but was afraid of contradicting his father.
