U.S. Diabetes Rates Have Risen Steadily

By Bloomberg News | June 25, 2007

The number of Americans with diabetes has climbed 5% annually since 1990, according to an American government study.

Most of the surge in diabetes cases was due to patients developing the form of the disease known as type 2, which occurs mainly in adults age 40 and older who are overweight, according to the study released yesterday at a meeting of the American Diabetes Association in Chicago.

Nearly 21 million Americans now have diabetes.
