2 Motorcyclists Struck By Out-of-Control Car

An out-of-control car collided with two motorcycles in Battery Park City last evening, leaving one motorist dead and two others injured, officials said.

A man driving south in the right lane on South Street passed a parked MTA bus and then struck the motorcyclists at the intersection of South and Whitehall streets at about 5:05 p.m., according to police reports. After hitting the motorcycles, the car, a black sedan, came to a halt against concrete barriers in front of the Staten Island Ferry Terminal.

One motorcyclist, a man who had not been identified as of press time, was pronounced dead at the scene, and the car driver and the other motorcyclist were taken to Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan with injuries. The driver of the car, a 31-year-old man, is reported to be in serious but stable condition, while the 28-year-old male motorcyclist is listed in critical condition.

Police said they did not yet know what caused the accident, but were investigating the scene. Whitehall and South streets were closed to traffic following the accident, and cars were rerouted on the Battery Park Underpass.
