After Guns Arrest, Cache Of Weapons Found in Queens
An arsenal of high-powered weapons has been discovered in the home of a Queens man arrested with an assault rifle on a Manhattan street this week.
Police officials said they had been seeking the man, identified as Suwei Chuang, 36, of Flushing, after receiving a tip that he had a gun during a separate investigation by the organized crime unit. After following him for several blocks, police said they stopped Mr. Chuang at a deserted spot south of the Brooklyn Bridge near Gold and Spruce streets on Wednesday. Lying visible in the backseat of his Toyota Cruiser, police found an AR-15 assault rifle with a scope and 800 rounds of ammunition.
After arresting him, police then searched Mr. Chuang's home, at 135-11 40th Road, where they said they found an arsenal that included at least nine guns, including an automatic machine gun and a Glock handgun stolen from upstate. Also found were more than 28,000 rounds of assorted ammunition, 40 large combat knives, bulletproof vests, and six police-type radios.
The commanding officer of the Organized Crime Investigation Division, Inspector Brian O'Neill, said police were investigating whether he was selling guns out of his home.
"There weren't any price tags on them," he said, but added: "We are looking at the idea that he may have been dealing in these firearms."
Police said it appeared Mr. Chuang is unemployed, although they said he was in the U.S. Army for three years.
He has been charged with criminal possession of a weapon.
