Bronx Neighborhood Files Suit on Sewage Stench
Residents of a polluted Bronx neighborhood are suing New York City and a private waste recycling company.
Residents in Hunts Point say putrid odors coming from two sewage facilities infiltrates homes and schools, keeping them from enjoying their yards or hanging clothes out to dry.
They say students at a local school sometimes can't play outside.
One plant is a city-run sewage facility that takes in waste for 600,000 New Yorkers. The other is a privately owned company that transforms sewage into fertilizer pellets.
Synagro Technologies Inc. of Houston owns the private plant. The company and its parent company, the Carlyle Group, didn't return calls seeking comment.
City officials say they're reviewing the lawsuit and working with residents to address complaints.
