Budget Could Be Worse Next Year, Bloomberg Says

By GRACE RAUH, Staff Reporter of the Sun | July 1, 2008

Mayor Bloomberg is warning that, based on projections, the city's budget for next year will make the latest budget negotiations look like "child's play."

He said that if it turns out the city was "too prudent" in its budget cuts, adjustments would be made, but he said that groups impacted by the budget should assume that the city's finances won't change.

The City Council approved the budget on Sunday night despite objections from both council members and social service providers, who said it slashed funding from organizations that work with the city's most vulnerable residents.

"The budget negotiations next year, they will make this one look like child's play in terms of having to pick and choose," Mr. Bloomberg said.
