City's Art Commission Is Renamed

The agency that reviews design plans for city-owned property, the Art Commission, will now be known as the Public Design Commission, Mayor Bloomberg and the agency's president announced yesterday at the Annual Awards for Excellence in Design ceremony.
The commission was renamed to put emphasis on its commitment to design, and particularly to environmentally sustainable design.
"Because most New Yorkers take mass transit instead of driving, nearly 80% of all our greenhouse gas emissions come from buildings," Mr. Bloomberg said. "This is where we need to focus our efforts."
The commission was founded in 1898 and is made up of 11 members who serve the agency without compensation.
