Meat from cloned animals sold in the city would have to be clearly labeled as such if legislation by City Council member Gale Brewer passes.
"We have 'free range' or 'organic' written on my chicken when I go to the supermarket and this would be the same, whether it be 'cloned' or 'genetically identical,'" Ms. Brewer, who represents parts of Manhattan, said yesterday.
The Food and Drug Administration approved the sale of meat and milk from cloned cows, pigs, and goats in January and said their research showed it to be as safe as food from the original animals.
"I don't have any health concerns that I'm knowledgeable about, but just like any other product that we purchase, we want to know what they are," Ms. Brewer said.
She added that some consumers might have "ethical problems" with cloned food.
