Council Members Honor President of Bolivia

By Staff Reporter of the Sun | April 22, 2008

City Council members are honoring the president of Bolivia, Evo Morales, with a proclamation that recognizes him for his dedication and commitment to equal rights for indigenous people.

Mr. Morales, a populist leader who is a staunch critic of America, will receive the proclamation at the American Indian Community House in Manhattan from members of the council's Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus. The Speaker of the City Council, Christine Quinn, was not invited to the event and will not attend, a spokesman said. When speaking at a United Nations forum on indigenous issues yesterday, Mr. Morales said capitalism needed to come to a halt to save the world from climate change.

"If we want to save our planet earth, we have a duty to put an end to the capitalist system," he said, according to BBC News.
