Day Care Proprietor Indicted for Drug Stash

By CHRISTOPHER FAHERTY, Staff Reporter of the Sun | March 14, 2008

Police arrested the manager of a day care center in upper Manhattan after finding three pounds of marijuana, a digital scale, and plastic bags used for drug packaging inside a kitchen cupboard, officials announced today.

The suspect who ran the licensed day care center at 2660 Eighth Avenue that apparently camouflaged a drug dealing operation, Akwasiba Radellant, and another suspect, Donald Crespo, were indicted yesterday by the New York City Special Narcotics Prosecutor on charges of Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Criminal Possession of Marijuana, officials said.

Besides drugs, police discovered a three-month-old baby girl inside the dilapidated center, which had plastic bags covering the windows, deactivated fire alarms, and dirty pacifiers lying on the floor, officials said. Both suspects were inside the center at the time of the search last week, and Mr. Crespo had $1,245 in his possession, officials said.

Mr. Crespo remains in jail on bail of $15,000, while defendant Ms. Radellant posted bail in the same amount, officials said.
