A principal at an East Village high school was arrested yesterday morning for attempting to impede the arrest of one of his students, police officials said.
The principal of the East Side Community High School on East 12th Street, Mark Federman, 37, was arrested for obstruction of governmental administration and resisting arrest at about 7:50 a.m. after one of his students was arrested for punching a school safety officer, officials said.
Mr. Federman allegedly tried to stop a safety school safety guard from taking the student, Isamara Gonzales, 17, out the front door of the school after she was arrested for assaulting the officer, a spokeswoman for the Department of Education, Dina Paul Parks, said.
The officer was injured after being assaulted by Ms. Gonzales, police said. Another school safety guard was hurt during a struggle with Mr. Federman and taken to an area hospital, police said.
Police gave Mr. Federman a desk ticket and charged him with obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest. He will not face disciplinary measures from the Department of Education, Ms. Parks said.
Ms. Gonzales was charged with assault in the second degree, police said.
