FDNY Unveils Its High-Rise Simulator
The fire department broke ground today on a $4.5 million high-rise simulator that will be used to better train firefighters. The 4,000-square-foot project will add four stories to the department's current simulator at its academy on Randall's Island.
"Fires in high-rise buildings are among the most complex and dangerous that a firefighter can face," the fire commissioner, Nicholas Scoppetta, said. "This innovative training tool will provide the most realistic firefighter training available."
The Leary Firefighters Foundation, whose founder is actor and comedian Denis Leary, will provide a majority of the funding for the new simulator.
