Governors Island Sees Spike in Summer Visitors

Governors Island saw a surge in visitors this summer, as more than 55,000 people came to the island between June and September, double that of 2006, the city and state announced yesterday.
Located just off the southern tip of Manhattan, the city and state are gradually advancing their plans to remake the former military base, and opened up large portions of the 172-acre island to visitors this summer.
The city and state ultimately envision a large park and a mixed-use development on the island, though with the overall concept still murky. To increase the public's awareness of the island, the two governments are pushing New Yorkers to visit it.
