Man Killed While Bicycling to Work

By Staff Reporter of the Sun | December 6, 2007

A Town Hall recording engineer was killed riding his bike to work yesterday after a person exiting from an illegally parked vehicle struck him with a car door and knocked him into the path of a truck.

David Smith, 63, of West 9th Street worked on classical recordings and focused on helping young talent get "a leg up," according to his partner of 36 years, John Moody, 81.

He also rode his bike to work every day.

"He liked the exercise and he didn't like the subways," Mr. Moody said. "He'd ride in almost all weather."

Yesterday, Mr. Moody was riding his bike at around 9 a.m. on Sixth Avenue at 36th Street when he was hit by the door of a car parked in the bike lane.

The impact sent him flying in front of an oncoming truck, which struck and killed him.

The crash came the same week a city group that advocates for bicyclists launched a new system, known as Crashstat, to track the city's most dangerous streets for bicycles and pedestrians.

The driver of the vehicle was issued three different summonses, for parking in a bike lane, blocking a fire hydrant, and opening a door unsafely into traffic, police said.
