A man hit by a subway train in Manhattan yesterday survived, but lost an arm, officials said.

Fire department officials reported that a man between 50 and 60 years old jumped onto a subway track at 86th Street and Broadway, just before 1 p.m. His right arm was severed when an oncoming no. 1 train hit him.

He was extricated from the tracks alive and was able to move after the collision.

The man was taken to St. Luke's-Roosevelt Hospital Center in Manhattan.

Officials said they believed the man's jump was an attempted suicide.
