Mayor Announces Greenhouse Gas Plan
Mayor Bloomberg announced yesterday that the city has earmarked $80 million to help reduce the government's greenhouse gas emissions over the next 10 years. The initiative, which is a key part of the mayor's larger environmental plan, will be headed up by a new steering committee reporting back to the mayor in the coming months on how to achieve the goal. Of the $80 million, $56 million will go toward capital investments to upgrade municipal buildings, which are responsible for 80% of the city's emissions. The mayor also released a status report yesterday on the 127 environmental initiatives he unveiled during his Earth Day speech, and 83% of them are underway.
