Michelle Obama Says Her Husband Will Fight for Gay Equality

Michelle Obama is telling a gay Democratic group in New York that her husband will fight for equality for gays just as he fought to help working-class families overcome economic inequalities.

The wife of the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee, Senator Obama, spoke last night at a Manhattan dinner for the Democratic National Committee's Gay and Lesbian Leadership Council.

She's touting her husband's record pushing for workplace discrimination legislation in Illinois and telling churchgoers they need to combat homophobia in the black community.

Mr. Obama has said states should each decide whether to allow gay marriage. Mrs. Obama says her husband wants equal treatment for any relationship recognized under state law.

The DNC says the dinner raised more than $1 million.
