A New Deterrent for Parking Violators: Shame

By Special to the Sun | March 15, 2007

Public humiliation is the latest penalty for drivers who use their government issued parking permits illegally. A new website, uncivilservants.org, goes live today, where photographs of permit holders parked in front of fire hydrants, on sidewalks, and in crosswalks will be posted.

The website's goal is to combat parking permit abuse, which transit advocacy groups label an "epidemic" in New York City. The city issues about 150,000 parking permits a year, and a recent study by Transportation Alternatives found that 77% of permit holders used their government-issued parking permits illegally.
