Nun Succumbs to Cancer Post 9/11

By Staff Reporter of the Sun | November 3, 2006

A nun who said she suffered from lung disease after working for six months at ground zero has died. Sister Cynthia Mahoney died yesterday of respiratory failure in South Carolina, her attorney, David Worby, said. She was 54.

In August, Mahoney requested that an autopsy be performed after her death to prove that her disease was caused by working at ground zero after the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001. She spent six months blessing human remains at the site and later developed lung disease.

"By raising attention to her own devastating illness, Sister Mahoney will continue as she did in life to help those affected by 9/11," Senator Clinton said in a statement yesterday.
