Port Plan Will Meet Council Resistance

A City Council member is expected to introduce a resolution today calling on the city to drop plans to close the last container port in Brooklyn.
The resolution, sponsored by David Yassky, would send a strong message to the city, which requires approval from the council to shut down the port, located on Piers 7-10 at Red Hook.
The city once envisioned a thriving waterfront at the piers, complete with housing, two cruise ship terminals, and new maritime-related industry. In recent months, officials have said that vision is more of a long-term goal than an immediate one, though a spokeswoman for the Economic Development Corporation said the city remained committed to executing the vision and acquires the piers from the Port Authority.
