Schools Benefit From 'Take a Veteran to School Day'
Veterans of wars ranging from World War II to the war in Iraq visited five schools in New York City yesterday as part of a national outreach campaign, "Take a Veteran to School Day."
Rep. Charles Rangel, who served in Korea, took part, speaking to students at Hunter College High School on the Upper East Side. Veterans also visited classrooms at Frederick Douglass Academy in Harlem, P.S. 56 in Queens, P.S. 132 in Brooklyn, and the Susan Wagner High School on Staten Island.
"Take a Veteran to School day," which is sponsored by the History Channel and Time Warner Cable, seeks to teach students about veterans' experiences during war.
The campaign runs through November 12. Campaign organizers said they expect veterans to visit some 300 schools nationwide.
