Third Ground Breaking Set for 2nd Ave. Line

By Special to the Sun | March 29, 2007

The Second Avenue Subway line will celebrate its third— and what transit officials say they hope is its final—groundbreaking ceremony on April 12, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced yesterday. City, state, and federal officials will be invited to attend the ceremony beneath 99th Street in a subway tunnel the city built when it began construction on the East Side line in the 1970s.

Responding to concerns of Upper East Side residents about the disruptions construction might cause, the MTA chairman, Peter Kalikow, said yesterday, "most people won't see it." The tunnel-boring machine will be used underground.
