Two Firefighters Arrested For Arson at Manhattan Firehouse

Two firefighters were arrested yesterday for allegedly setting fire to the door of a Manhattan firehouse, fire officials said.

The firefighters, Michael Izzo, 30, and Richard Capece, 31, allegedly used a flammable liquid to set fire to the firehouse that holds Engine 34 and Ladder 21 on West 38th Street early Saturday morning.

A firefighter in the building smelled the smoke and the firefighters working at the station were able to put the fire out before it spread, fire officials said. No one was injured.

Fire Commissioner Nicholas Scopetta condemned the incident, calling it "depraved" in a statement yesterday evening.

Mr. Izzo works at Engine 242 in Brooklyn, and lives in Staten Island. He has six years on the job. Mr. Cacece worked at Engine 1 in Manhattan, and lives in Brooklyn. He has been a firefighter for five years. The two were arrested after a two-day investigation and face felony charges for arson and reckless endangerment, fire officials said.
